Night-time fire at EC HQs

Nearly 1000 electronic voting machines (EVMs) were gutted in the fire that broke out at the Election Commission (EC) Building in Dhaka's Agargaon area on Sunday night.
"No important documents were harmed, but nearby 1000 EVMs got damaged in the fire," EC's Additional Secretary Md Moklesur Rahman told reporters on Monday afternoon.
Director General of National Identity Registration Brig Gen Md Saidul Islam also talked to journalists on the fire incident, which originated from the basement of the EC building around 11:06pm.
The fire was brought under control by 10 units of firefighters after an hour of efforts around 12:25am.
"Some electric wiring and air conditioners were damaged along with EVMs kept in

a room of the basement," said Md Moklesur Rahman, adding, "The basement has several rooms and the fire was erupted from one of them. The basement rooms are also furnished with EVM control unit, monitor and ballot unit."     
He mentioned that the control unit remained unharmed as it was in a separate room.    
When asked, Md Moklesur Rahman said, "There were 5000 to 6000 EVMs in the room. We have asked our officials to count the number of damaged EVMs."  
Meanwhile, a five-member committee has been formed to investigate the fire at the EC headquarters.  
The committee, headed by Additional Secretary of the Election Commission Mokhlesur Rahman, has been asked to submit its report within three working days.
