Staff Reporter :
Women's rights activists bring out a torch procession with the slogan "Muktir Michhil" to protest the violence against women in Dhaka on Wednesday, marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
Women of different ages and from various walks of life took part in the event in Dhaka under the banner of Feminists Across Generations, also known as FemGen Alliance.
They started the demonstration by bringing out a torch procession -- with the slogan "Muktir Michhil" or "March for Freedom- protesting the recent rise of violence against women in the country.
The procession started around 7pm from in front of the office of rights organization Naripokkho situated on Satmasjid Road in Dhaka's Dhanmondi area.
More than a hundred women joined the procession that ended in front of the parliament, on Manik Mia Avenue.
Although the protest was not socially distanced, in light of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the demonstrators were wearing face masks. Many of them were also seen wearing blindfolds as a sign of protest.
On the way there, the demonstrators organized a flash mob in front of Dhanmondi 9/A area , with the theme "Tui Dhorshok" or "You are a rapist."
A second flash mob was arranged in front of Shankar area in Dhanmondi, the third one in front of Abahani Field intersection in Dhanmondi and the fourth one in front of Dhanmondi 27. The fifth and final flash mob was performed in front of the parliament.
The protesters also read out a statement during their stay in front of the parliament.
"We took to the streets and our response was to call for protection of the women and girls of our country, to keep them safe. In October, 441 more cases of rape and attempted rape were reported. Yet, we have seen no satisfactory response from the government for effective solutions to this widespread deep-rooted issue," the FemGen said in a statement earlier.
