Ministry warns banks of fresh cyber attack
Staff Reporter :
The Ministry of Finance has issued a fresh warning of cyber attack from North Korean hackers targeting banks in Bangladesh.
The Financial Institutions Division under the Ministry of Finance issued the warning in a letter to all banks on Thursday asking the authorities to take extra security measures to thwart a potential cyber attack from North Korean hacker group 'Beagle Boys' which was involved in stealing money from Bangladesh Bank's reserves in 2016.
It said that North Korean hackers have resumed targeting banks through the use of fraudulent international money transfers through hacking Swift network and ATM booths of different banks in Bangladesh.
In view of the warning, the banks have increased the security in the online banking system, insiders said.
They said banks have already stepped up surveillance of online transactions and ATM booths. Some banks have started closing ATM booths at night.
Earlier in August, the central bank had issued a warning against a new cyber attack on Bangladeshi banks. Banks were instructed to be vigilant saying that North Korean hacker group could carry out the attack.
After receiving the warning, all the banks took special measures. However, no attack was reported.
