Staff Reporter :
Claiming that country's 30-40 percent people have already contracted coronavirus, Dr Bijon Kumar Sil, chief of the Gonoshasthaya Kendra team which invented Covid-19 testing kits, said 80 percent people might be infected with the virus in the next one month.
He made the startling prediction joining a Facebook Live session of a newspaper on Saturday night.
Dr Bijon said many asymptotic patients are making recovery without knowing that they are infected. "Perhaps, they're suffering from light fever, cough and tiredness." Replying to query, he said the immune system of Bangladeshi people are stronger than that of residents of developed countries.
"The immune system of Europeans is sluggish."
The researcher said the severity of coronavirus has decreased by 30-40 percent in Bangladesh where the immune system is a factor.
Mentioning that 80 percent of the total population needs to be infected for herd immunity, he said he thinks this might happen in the next one month.
Herd immunity is a form of indirect protection from infectious disease that occurs when a large percentage of a population has become immune to an infection, whether through vaccination or previous infections, thereby providing a measure of protection for individuals who are not immune.
Dr Bijon said coronavirus will spare no one so matter how much people try hide at home. "As a storm touches every tree, coronavirus will also attack us all."
