How can turn your child into a reader
Weekend Plus Desk
You will often find parents complaining how their child isn’t reading enough. We know reading helps in improving vocabulary, makes them imaginative and even helps them express in a more articulate manner.
No wonder then most school teachers recommend your child to read a book every single day. At the Times Literature Festival - Bangalore, we met three children’s authors, Venita Coelho, Deepa Agarwal, Khyrunissa A who shared how parents can make their child an ardent reader.
Scholastic does a study every year across the world on how and why children read. Every year their number one finding is parents who read have children who read. If you are wondering why your child isn’t reading, maybe you should wonder why you are not reading. So, if you want your child to read, you start reading.
Children are very imitative. Parents should read themselves to make their children read - and by this I mean both the mother and father. Somehow all the thrust is on the mothers but it should be balanced. Have a lot of books in the house and inculcate a reading culture in your house. So, children should see their parents around them, see books around them. It will improve their vocabulary and imagination.
We often hear complaints from parents that children are not reading and they try all sorts of things. So, I feel parents have to first of all start reading to make their children start reading. Tell them bedtime stories.
If the child is insisting that he wants to play on the iPad, ask him to read a book and then give him iPad.
Allow them to discover the beauty of reading and books. There are today so many distractions and it can get tough but you should early on introduce them to appealing books with pictures and illustrations that make them interested in reading.
Make reading a fun activity for them and not like a pain.
