Absolute power leads to corruption, say analysts

Mahmud Sohel :
Corruption has spread all spheres of the society, as there is no check and balance in our democracy, political analysts said on Thursday.
They came up with the remark in reaction to Jubo League (JL) leaders involvement in running illegal casinos in Dhaka.
The law-enforcement agencies on Wednesday night sealed off four casinos in the city, which were running under the mask of club activities by the JL leaders.
One JL leader Khaled Mahmud Bhuiyan was arrested for running such an illegal casino inside a club. Observers said such incidents indicate that how the ruling party men indulged in corruption and involved in illegal business for minting money.
Dr Syed Anwar Hossain, a history professor at the Dhaka University told The New Nation that when a party is in power for long-time, its leaders are being involved in such corruption, history says
"So, the campaign against corruption and illegal business must be continued if the government wants to tackle such activities by ruling party-men," he said.
Abul Kasem Fazlul Hoque, a professor of Bangla Department at the same varsity, said that misconduct has reached such a level that may be embarrassing for the Prime Minister herself. So, crackdown has launched at the city's casinos following directives from the government high-ups.
He commented that the casinos bear the evidence of that corruption has engulfed all spheres of the society and the ruling party leaders are mostly behind it.  When asked, he said, the law-enforcement agencies did not take stringent measures to stop such crimes before, as they were not being directed to go tough against the ruling party men.
"Now the situation has reached an alarming level forcing the government to take such actions," he added.
Abul Kasem Fazlul Hoque further said that lack of check and balance in any democracy leads to absolute power for a ruling government and thus helps spread corruption in the society.
