Weekend Plus Desk : Hot yoga is one of the most popular forms of yoga. From detoxifying the negative energies to making you sweat like crazy, just like a heavy-duty workout, hot yoga promises you intense cardiovascular and strength training benefits. Raised temperatures in the room also help the body relax and achieve the peace of mind desired. However, a hot yoga class is very different from a regular yoga class. You need to go in prepared and well aware if you want to avoid injuries. If you are planning to attend a hot yoga session, keep these points in mind: Avoid heavy lotions and perfumes Hot yoga takes place in a closed environment where temperatures are generally kept higher than usual so that you exert body heat and sweat away the toxins. Wearing heavy consistency creams can make you slip and make it difficult to get into certain positions. For the same reason, avoid wearing excessive perfumes either. As you sweat, the scent becomes more prominent and may disturb people who can be a little sensitive to it which can even make them dizzy. Give your doctor a heads up before you go While recent studies say that hot yoga can be way more effective in lowering your blood pressure, it might not be the best class to sign up for if you are a diabetic or if you are prone to chronic conditions. The heat and sweating can worsen your health and pose problems. The same extends to pregnant women, especially those who are in their first trimester. It is best to consult your doctor first and then take a call about going ahead with hot yoga. Avoid eating heavy before the meal/water Although it is important to eat well before you do yoga, it is always a bad idea to fill up your stomach heavily before you head out to the gym or yoga class. Instead of a full meal, you should be snacking on something light and healthy, probably something that doesn't make you bloat as well. For the same reason, you should not be chugging a lot of water before the class. You might feel that it will hydrate you but it can make the practice for certain poses a little difficult. Drinking a lot of water will also urge you to use the washroom a lot more! Avoid strenuous workout the same way
The reason why a lot of people choose yoga is to work on their flexibility to practice other forms of workouts as well. However, if you are new to hot yoga, consider taking a slow approach. Avoid doing strenuous exercises or including more workouts on the same day. Remember, your body needs time to recover and heal from a hot yoga session and overdoing it will do you no good.
