Sports bodies observe National Mourning Day

Different sports federations and clubs observed the National Mourning Day and 44th martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on Thursday. Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF), Dhaka Abahani Limited, National Sports Council, Bangladesh Handball Federation and Bangladesh Table Tennis Federation arranged doa mahfils and discussions separately on the occasion.
BFF organised a Qurankhawani and later distributed food among orphans and underprivileged people after Zohr prayers at the BFF House.
Recalling the memories of Sheikh Kamal, founder of Dhaka Abahani, BFF President Kazi Md Salahuddin said, "I'm missing the support of Sheikh Kamal. His dream was to build Bangladesh as one of the strongest football teams in Asia. His immature death caused a heavy loss in the field of country's sports, especially in football."
BFF members Shawkat Ali Khan Jahangir, Mahfuza Akter Kiron, Abdur Rahim, Amit Khan Shuvro, Mohammad Iqbal Hossain, General Secretary Md Abu Nayeem Shohag and other EC members were also present on the occasion.
Dhaka Abahani Limited placed wreaths at the portrait of Sheikh Kamal on the club premises and at his grave at Banani Graveyard, distributed food among orphans and underprivileged people and arranged a doa mahfil on the club premises at Dhanmondi.
On that day in 1975, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members were assassinated by a cabal of military men.
Eighteen members of his family, including Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, three sons - Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal and 10-year-old Sheikh Russell, two daughters-in-law Sultana Kamal and Rosy Jamal, brother Sheikh Naser, peasant leader Abdur Rab Serniabat, youth leader Sheikh Fazlul Haq Moni and his wife Arzu Moni, Baby Serniabat, Sukanta Babu, Arif and Abdul Nayeem Khan Rintu were, among others, were killed along with him on that fateful night.
Bangabandhu's Military Secretary Brigadier General Jamil was also killed.
