City Desk : Professional leaders and social watchdogs at a meeting mentioned concerted effort of all government and non-government entities concerned has become crucial to protect consumers rights for ensuring sound public health. They also observed that the issue of the consumers rights is well accepted throughout the world and in the free market economy. So, there is an urgent need of bringing all the businessmen and others concerned under the awareness programme in this regard. The observation came in a round-table discussion styled "Consumers Rights to Protect Harmony" jointly organized recently by Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) and the Hunger Project Bangladesh at Master Chef Restaurant in Rajshahi. President of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industries Md Muniruzzaman, Professor Shah Azam Shantunu from Department of Marketing in Rajshahi University and Engineer Zunayed Ahmed from Bangladesh Standard and Testing Institution addressed the meeting as focal persons. Prof Shah Azam said consumer protection, in the broader sense, refers to the laws and regulations that ensure fair interaction between service providers and consumers. He mentioned that the consumers rights in the developed nations focus on the right to information, choice, redress and representation, but we are deprived of such privileges. Unsafe food has been adjudged as a major threat to public health in Bangladesh, so emphasis should be given to adopting effective measures in this regard, he added. Prof Azam identically mentioned that all sorts of unsafe foods like adulterated and contaminated ones are injurious to public health. So, there is no way but to ensure safe and nutritious food for all. Chaired by CAB local unit President Gazi Giash, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Editor of Daily Sonali Sangbad Liakat Ali, Editor of Daily Sonar Desh Akbarul Hassan Millat, Regional Coordinator of the hunger project Mijanur Rahman and its area coordinator Subrata Kumar Paul.
