Committee formed to make constitution for JnUCSU polls
JnU Correspondent :
According to Jagannath University Act-2005, there is no section or sub-section of Jagannath University's Central Students' Union (JnUCSU) in order to provide necessary recommendations for amendment of the law, in order to make that section or sub-clause and 'JnUCSU' constitution in the university law, A four-member committee has been formed by convening Prof Dr Sarkar Ali Akkas.
The other members of the committee are Prof Dr Md Atiar Rahman, Dean of Arts Faculty, Proctor Md Nur Mohammad and Prof Abdullah Baki, Director of Student Welfare.
The committee has been instructed to make recommendations for amending the law of the University within forty-five working days and to form a ' JnUCSU ' constitution. It is to be noted that the Assistant Registrar (Law) will serve as the Secretary in that committee.
Moreover, for long time, the leaders and activists of different party demonstrated demanding JnUCSU polls on university campus holding concert, campaigns, seminars but university authorities were totally silent, they didn't head to it slightly. But nowadays, the demand for polls is getting stronger among general students. Lately on the JnU campus, the JnUCSU election has been one of the primary topics of discussion among student organisations and general students. All demanded immediate formation of law regarding the polls. Through social media under the Facebook group titled" We want JnUCSU polls" students post status demanding the immediate polls using the hashtag for "Joksu Chai "and expressed their angry to university authorities who are indifferent to their demand.
To arrange election, University Law will have to be edited. It's also known that, there were 14 elections held of JCCSU during Jagannath College. After founding Jagannath University on 2005, no law regarding the University Central Students Union pollswas made.
JCCSU and Jagannath College student leaders were at the forefront of the 1952 Language Movement, the Education Movement, the 1969 uprising, and the independence struggle. Since independence, Jagannath College Students have also played the key role in the protests for democracy and against tyranny.
The first Jagannath College Central Students Union (JCCSU) polls held on 1954, until 1969, 10 committees elected through elections. Though Jagannath College Central Student's Union elections are to be held nearly every year, there have only been four since independence on 1972, 1979, 1986 and 1997. The last JCCSU election was held 32 years ago in 1987. Though efforts were made several times, no election has been organised since then.
According to the university sources, Jagannath College was converted into public university through the passage of a law in National Parliament. Since that no polls were held for central student's union.
"The university administration had assured us of holding the Jagannath University Central Students' Union (JnUCSU) polls after the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (JnUCSU) polls but we are yet to see any progress in this regard," said APM Sohel, convener of "SadharanShikkharthiOdhikarSongrokkhonParishod"
Prof Dr Mijanur Rahman, Vice-Chancellor of JnU says, "There are many complexity about JnUcsu polls due to adequate law. Every university should arrange Central Students' Union polls to practice leadership. We made committee to form adequate law for JnUcsu polls.
