Chattogram Bureau :
Information Minister and Awami League Publicity and Publication Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud on Sunday said Awami League would need to stay in power uninterruptedly to continue the current trend of development as the country is moving forward under the leadership of Awami League.
"The country is moving forward under the leadership of Awami League. Awami League will stay in power as long as the people will support the party," he told a rally marking the founding anniversary of AL in Engineers' Institution auditorium in Chattogram.
AL Presidium member Engineer Mosharraf Hossain addressed the function as the chief guest with Chattogram City AL Acting President Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury in the chair. Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury, Deputy Minister for Education Barrister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury Nowfel, Chattogram City Corporation Mayor and Chattogram City AL General Secretary AJM Nasir Uddin spoke on the occasion as special guests.
The minister said AL has been turned into a party of masses over the 70 years as the party has made politics people-oriented. He called upon the new generation to learn the history of AL which led the 1971 War of Liberation saying "if you learn the history of Awami League, you will learn the history of Bangladesh."
The AL publicity secretary underscored the need for identifying intruders and opportunists in AL. "Now everyone wants to board on Awami League's 'boat'.
There is no need to take everyone on Awami League's boat as it can be capsized due to overload of passengers," he said.
Referring to Malaysia and Singapore, the minister said the parties which brought independence for Malaysia and Singapore had stayed in power for 55 years and 40 years respectively.
He said Awami League should stay in power uninterruptedly to continue the current trend of development.Hasan said had Bangabandhu remained alive, Bangladesh would have become developed nation like Singapore many years ago.
But, the anti-liberation forces did not want that and they perpetrated the assassination of the country's founding father.
"The perpetrators thought that if Bangabandhu would not remain alive, the country could not go ahead. But Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina did not let it happen. under her leadership, the country is advancing," he said.
