Experts opine at a seminar, Dhaka: An unlivable city!

Staff Reporter :
Urban specialists at a discussion on Saturday said that Dhaka is unlivable city in every indicator.
"The capital city is staying away from every indicator of a livable city. Traffic gridlock, air and noise pollution, water logging, less urban services, lack of public transportations and risky habitations are the major problems of the city," they said.
The specialists said this at a seminar at the National Press Club organised by 'Nogor Unnayan Sangbadik Forum' on the occasion of its fourth anniversary.
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md. Atiqul Islam was the chief guest at the meeting.
Amitosh Pal, President of the forum, presided over the programme while General Secretary Motin Abdullah moderated it.
Dr. Adil Muhammad Khan, General Secretary of Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP), presented the keynote paper.
Mayor Atiqul Islam said that the city's footpaths must be kept clear to reduce traffic congestions.
"When footpaths are occupied by hawkers, people are forced to walk on the roads, which triggered gridlocks," he said.
He said there are many challenges remain, including road and food safety, ensuring adequate water supply, and freeing wetlands to make the capital more habitable.
"We need to work collectively and responsibility to face these challenges and overcome the situation," he said.
The DNCC Mayor also said that good governance is also a major factor.   He said that illegally occupied canals in the city must be freed to remove water logging from the capital.
Atiqul Islam also said that the anarchies of the public transport sector will be removed soon as the government is taking necessary measures in this regard.
Dr Adil said if the given numbers of all indicators are 100 then Dhaka gets only 38 when 50 is the pass mark.
City Transport Specialist Dr. SM Saleh Uddin, Chief Engineer of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) Abdul Latif Helali, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Chief Town Planner Sirajul Islam and journalist Toufiq Ali also spoke on the4 occasion.
Earlier of the day, a rally was organised by the forum in front of the National Press club marking the anniversary with different slogans to make the city more livable.
