World Telecommunication, Information Society Day observed

Call to reach digital facilities to everyone

BARISHAL : District Administration brought out a rally in observance of the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day in Braishal on Saturday.

The World Telecommunication and Information Society Day  was  observed on Saturday calling to end discrimination prevailing in this sector with theme styled as 'bridging the standardization gap'.
The Day marks the founding of ITU on 17 May 1865 when the first International Telegraph Convention was signed in Paris.
A procession inaugurated by flying balloon at Barishal Circuit House premises ended at office of Deputy Commissioner Barishal.
Then a discussion meeting on the theme and aim of the day was held at the conference room of DC.
The programme organised by District Administration was presided over by SM Ajiar Rahman, deputy commissioner.
Among others Shahidul Islam, Deputy Director local government , Subrata Biswas Das, Robin Shish, Administrative Magistrates, Shamim Fakir, Deputy General Manager BTCL, addressed the programme.
The speakers said this year, was the 50th anniversary of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day which has been celebrated annually since 1969.
Setting standards is a fundamental pillar of ITU's mission as the specialized agency of the United Nations for information and communication technologies (ICTs). ITU standards help accelerate ICTs for all SustainableDevelopment Goals.
The theme of 2019 will allow ITU Membership and other key stakeholders to fonus on the opportunities for   participation of developing countries in ITU's standards-making process.
They also stressed on empowering local experts in the standardization process at the national, regional and international levels; and promoting the implementation of international standards in developing countries.
 Staff Reporter from Kishoreganj reports: Kishoreganj District Administration organised a colourfull rally, discussion, seminar and postring marking the World Tele-Communication and  Information Service Day  on Saturday.
A discussion on 'Bridging the Standurdization Gap'  was held at Collectorate Conference Room on Saturday morning.
ADC (Education & ICT) Abdullah-al-Mashud presided over the discussion. ADM Habibur Rahman and Additional S.P Masud Anowar were atteded as special guest.
It was addressed among others by veteran freedom fighter Prof M A Goni, senior journalist Mostafa Kamal, CAB President Alam Sarowar Tito, ICT Programme Officer Md. Alamgir Hossaion, Md. Nuruzzaman, CAB District Secretary Monowar Hossain Rony, Neef IT Supervisor Ashraf Ali, BTCL Engineer Md. Zakir Hossion and Assistant Commissioner Sagufta Haque.
Later, a colourful rally brought out in the town marking the day.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Shafiul Arif was present as the chief guest at a function organised at the District Headquarter in the morning. Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Ahsan Habib, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension of the district spoke. Bidhu Bhushan Roy, Junior Assistant Manager of BTCL Minhaj Hossain Mustafi Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Rafiqul Islam presided over the meeting.
Various students of different school colleges, teachers, government officials and journalists were present in the programme.
BSS from Rangpur adds: Speakers at a seminar  on Saturday called for reaching digital facilities to everyone using the existing telecommunication system and information technology to transform Bangladesh into a digital country by 2021.
They made the call at the post-rally seminar arranged at conference room of the Deputy Commissioner in observance of the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD)-2019 with the theme of "Bridging the Standardization Gap".
Earlier, the district administration with Posts and Telecommunications Division and Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Ltd (BTCL) brought out a rally on the streets with participations of officials, employees, students, youths and civil society members.
Different competitions were arranged for students on digitisation, telecommunication system and information technology on the occasion and prizes were districted among the winners.
With Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Syed Enamul Kabir in the chair, Acting Deputy Commissioner Ruhul Amin Mian attended the seminar as the  chief guest.
Rangpur Regional Manager of BTCL Md Azizul Islam and Rangpur Divisional Deputy Post Master General Pradip Kumar delivered their presentations as special guests.
Junior Assistant Manager of BTCL at its Rangpur regional office GawaherulIslam delivered keynote presentation in the seminar.
Officials of BTCL, Posts and Telecommunications Division, Social Service Department and different other government departments and digital service providing organisations participated in the open discussion session at the seminar.
The speakers said it is the high time to ensure international standard telecommunication and information technology services for common people tobuild a digital country by 2021 to pave the way for building a developed Bangladesh.
The chief guest said Bangladesh is effectively reaching government services to all people making Digital Bangladesh a reality by using its own satellite 'Bangabandhu Satellite-1' on way to build a developed Bangladesh by 2041 next.
