IU VC awarded 'Oitijjha Gold Medal'

Vice-Chancellor of Islamic University, Kushtia Prof Dr Harun-Ur- Rashid Askari  has been awarded the 'Oitijjha Gold Medal' for his contribution in the fields of education and literature.  
The award was given to him by Bangldesh Folklore Research Centre, University of Rajshahi in educationist and writer category.
Askari received the award on Saturday at the closing ceremony of the 4th International Folklore Conference 2019 held at the Birshrestho Hamidur Rahman Auditorium of Islamic University, Kushtia.
Ex-Professor Emeritus Barun Kumar Chakravarty of Rabindra Bharati University, West Bengal, India handed over the award to Prof Dr Rashid Askari. Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University Vice-Chancellor AHM Mustafizur Rahman, IU Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof M Shahinoor Rahman, Treasurer Prof M Selim Toha, faculty member of Arts and History of New Maxico University, USA Demon Joseph Monteclaur, Calcutta University's Bangla Department Professor Sanat Kumar Naska were, among others, present on the occasion. Dr Askari received his brief autobiography inscribed on a crest and a gold medal as recognition.
The award authorities nominated Askari for the award in March this year considering his sustained contribution to the country's education and literature sector.
Askari emerged as a writer in the mid-1990s and has written seven books and numerous articles/essays which have been published at home and abroad. His two Bengali books, Indo-English Literature and Others (Dhaka 1996) and Postmodern Literary and Critical Theory (Dhaka 2002) and two English books, The Wounded Land (Dhaka 2010), and the edited book, English Writings of Tagore, 3 vols (Dhaka 2012), deserve special mention.
His short fiction collection, Nineteen Seventy One and other stories (Dhaka 2011), has been translated into Hindi and French.
Former minister of Ministry of Communication, Syed Abul Hossain was also awarded in the ceremony. He has got the award as an education entrepreneur for his outstanding contribution to education by establishing many schools and colleges all over the country.
President of Bangladesh Folklore Research Centre, Prof Dr M Jahangir Hossain told the Daily Sun, "We introduced the award in 2009 with six categories: Folklore scholar, Education and Literature, Folklore research, Writer, Social welfare and Music artist. Oitijjha gold Medal award was introduced in 2018 to recognize individuals' overall contribution to education and literature.''
Before 2018 it was known as only "Otijjha Award''.
 From this year, the authorities will give in two forms as "Otijjha Award'' and "Otijjha Gold Medal Award" with same six categories, he added.
After the award giving ceremony the 4th international Folklore Conference concluded with paper presentation session titled on 'The Ethnicity and Culture of Bangladesh'.
The conference was held amid festive mood and enthusiasm. IU Folklore Studies Department, Bangladesh Folklore Research Centre, Rajshahi University, Loukik, Kolkata India, Jhenaidah District Administration and Jhenaidah Pourashva have jointly organized the conference.
Prof Dr Rashid Askari addressed the concluding session as the chief guest while ex-Professor Emeritus Barun Kumar Chakrabarty of Rabindra Bharati University, West Bengal, India delivered speech as the chief discussant with IU Folklore Studies Department chairman Prof M Saidur Rahman in the chair.
IU Folklore Studies Department lecturers Mustafizur Rahman and Moushumi Mou jointly anchored the concluding session attended by over two thousands participants from home and abroad.
IU former Proctor Prof M Mahbubar Rahman, student advisor Prof Paresh Chandra Barman and acting proctor Anisur Rahman were also present. After the programme, a cultural event was held at the auditorium.
