Legendary singer Shahnaz Rahmatullah was born on 2 January in 1952 in Dhaka. Ekbar Jete De Na Amar Chotto Sonar Gaye, Je Chilo Drishtir Shimanay and Ek Tara Tui Desher Kotha are Shahnaz Rahmatullah rendered notable songs.
She is the recipient of the Ekushey Padak in 1992. She also got Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the film Chhutir Phandey (1990). She is daughter of M Fazlul Haq and Asiya Haq. Popular film actor late Zafar Iqbal was her younger brother. Music director Anwar Parvez was another brother. Shahnaz Rahmatullah sang in Bangladeshi and Pakistani films. Her main area of singing entails modern songs (Adhunik Gaan) and patriotic songs.
Shahnaz Rahmatullah emerged as a singer in Dhaka in the mid-1960s. In late the 1960s and early 1970s, she rendered patriotic songs such as Sohni Dharti Allah Rakhe and Jeevay Jeevay Pakistan. She has released an album with Samina Chowdhury called Megh Roddur on which she rendered six songs composed by Shafiq Tuhin.
Shahnaz gave her voice for play-back songs in movies Notun Shur (1963) and Abar Tora Manush Ho (1973). Badol Diner Pakhi is her only solo album. She enthralled the music lovers by virtue of her rendering style. She also got Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Award, Bangladesh Chalachchitra Sangbadik Samity Award, Manik Mia Gold Medal 2017, etc. Shahnaz Rahmatullah died on March 23 of a heart attack at her residence in Baridhara at the age of 67.
