Sylhet Bureau :
In Sylhet Division, the target of Aus paddy plantation has been set on 2,00,000 hectares of land for this year, which was 1,72,000 ha last year.
This information was published in a workshop on 'Increasing Aush and maize cultivation in Habiganj' held at Zila Parishad hall room on Friday.
Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture Sanat Kumar Saha was present as chief guest.
He said, in Boro cultivation, both the cost and the risk are higher. Natural disaster is also a major reason for its damage. The farmers have to give more fertilisers and spend much for irrigation. A total of 32 kilograms of water is required for producing one kilogram of Boro rice.
On the other hand, the cost of Aus production is low. It requires less fertiliser, but the production is high. In one bigha land, the production of paddy is 16 to 20 maunds. Moreover, the irrigation cost is less.
Putting emphasis on maize production, he said that costs for maize production are low, but production is higher. Even farmers get more prices for it. Thus, farmers will be more benefitted in this connection.
As a result, the government is giving more emphasis on the crops that will benefit the farmers.
Highlighting the methods of maize production, former Director of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute Syed Nurul Alam said, a kind of insect Armyworm has arrived in Bangladesh from USA.
Recently, the insect attack in maize was noticed. It was first seen in India in May, 2018. He, however, said by using pheromone trap, the insect attack can be reduced.
