Chandpur   Correspondent :
Amid much enthusiasm, the month- long  'Muktijudhdher  Bijoy Mela-2018' began  formally  from Saturday  afternoon at Chandpur Hasan Ali Government High School ground.
The day coincides with the historical day as on this day in 1971, Chandpur  Sub Division was liberated from the grips of the Pakistani occupation army. Student leader Rabiul Hossain Kiron first hoisted the national flag in front of Chandpur Thana.
Former Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni MP, formally inaugurated the mela as chief guest by hoisting the national flag in front of the 'Ongiker'-a memorial monument of the martyrs of the Liberation War of 1971.  Swadhinota Padak winner  and freedom fighter  Dr  Syeda  Badrunnahar Chowdhury,  Zilla Muktijodhdha Sangsad President   M A Wadud, ADC General Shaokat Osman and  Additional Police Super Mizanur Rahman  were the special guests on the occasion.
Later, a discussion was held with freedom fighter  and District AL General Secretary  Abu Nayeem Patwary Dulal in the chair.
Bijoy Mela Committee  Chairman freedom fighter  Mohsin Pathan delivered welcome address while District AL President and Chandpur Municipal Mayor Nasiruddin Ahmed, Zila Muktijodhdha Commander M A Wadud, journalist  Kazi Shahadat, Adv Jahidul Islam Roman, Mela's  Secretary  General Harun Al Rashid ,  Adv Badiuzzaman, among others, spoke on the occasion.
The mela  ended with a musical programme  later.  The local artistes rendered patriotic songs.
There are about 150 stalls in and around the mela that has been tastefully decorated to suit the occasion.
In front of the main gate of the mela, there are portraits of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu  Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, four national leaders and of the Sector Commanders of the Liberation War.
There is a stall inside the mela  where portraits of the valiant freedom fighters who sacrificed their  precious lives   while fighting the Pak army in different parts of Chandpur   during  the Liberation War  are on display. There are photos of the living renowned  freedom fighters also on display in the stall. Many young boys and girls were seen to observe these portraits and pictures  with curiosity.
It may be noted here that during  Liberation War, as many as 417 people, freedom fighters and army men of Chandpur  died. An old woman Latufa Begum ,50, was killed when the Pak army  shot her near Chandpur Technical High School on 7April 1971 in Torpurchnondi village-an outskirt of Chandpur town. She was the first martyr here.
Close relatives said, Latufa was returning home with her cow and a goat as it was getting dark, when the Pak army shot her dead and later Pak army slaughtered the animals for their foods at night.
It deserves to be mentioned that during the turbulent days in  March, 1971, the first meeting and then organising meetings of the Sangram Parishad and action programmes for Liberation War  began just from this ground and that's why,  the  mela is organised at this ground every year in the heart of the town.
