Staff Reporter :
The Election Commission were 'embarrassed' at the Tuesday attack on BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir's motorcade and the pre-polls violence that claimed two lives.
"Two incidents happened on Tuesday. We feel embarrassed and deeply shocked," Chief Election Commission (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said on Wednesday on December 12.
The BNP secretary general's motorcade came under an attack en route to his home district Thakurgaon for polls campaign on Tuesday morning.
Two Awami League leaders were killed
in pre-election violence in Noakhali and Faridpur on Tuesday, the second day of election campaign for the 11th Parliamentary Election due on December 30.
The ruling AL blamed their arch-rival BNP and its allies Jamaat-e-Islami for the killings, which they rejected outright.
Speaking at a progamme for judicial magistrates in Dhaka, CEC said, "Mirza Fakhrul's motorcade in Thakurgaon has been attacked. It is unexpected... We never desired it.
"A life is more valuable than the election for 300 Parliamentary seats... We never want the people to die in violence. We have to find out the way out," he said.
The CEC urged all to be patient and follow the electoral code of conducts, saying, "Avoid any activity that goes against the election."
KM Nurul Huda asked the magistrates to save the congenial polls atmosphere, saying, "Be patient and respect others in conducting the election duties."
"The 11th Parliamentary Election will be very competitive and different from any other polls held in the past."
As many as 1,841 candidates are contesting in the December 30 polls
This year, over 104.2 million voters will exercise their franchise at 40,183 polling centres across Bangladesh.
