Shyama Puja celebrated amid festivity

 Hindu community celebrated 'Shyama Puja' locally known as Kali Puja amid festivity and religious fervor in Dupchanchia Upazila of Bogura district on Tuesday night.
Marking the festival, idols of the Goddess Kali have already been installed at different temples and pandals across the district. At some temples, animals have been sacrificed as one of the customs of the festival.
Secreatry of Puja Udjapon Parshad Romendra Nath Podder said, "The Hindu leaders said Shyama Puja or Deepabali is considered as the second largest festival of Bangalee Hindu community." 'The puja is celebrated in the night of Amavasya of the Bangla month of Kartik." he added.
At the night of the festival, members of the Hindu community light earthen lamps (Pradeep) at their houses. The main purpose of the puja is to seek the help of the goddess in destroying evil-both in the outside world and within human being.
President of upazila Puja Uddapon Parshad Asim Kumar Das said before the audience through a function goddess Kali was born out of the brow of Goddess Durga during one of her battles with the evil forces. He again said, during the battle, Kali was so much in a killing spree that she began destroying everything that came in her sight.
Barishal Correspondent adds:  Maha Shamshan Dipali Utsav of Hindu community members of Barisal was held on Tuesday night at Barisal Maha Shamshan Ghats and Dipabali and Diwali Utsav at their houses.
The Maha Shamshan Ghats (burning spot or cremation-grounds and grave yard of the parts of Hindu dead bodies) became over crowded with thousands of the members of the Hindu community came from different parts of the country and outside, to attend the ceremony and festival.
Tamal Malakar, secretary of Barisal Maha Shamshan Rakkha Committee  , said 'Maha  Shamshan Dipali' festival observes in the sub-continent only at Adi-Shamshan Ghat of Natun Bazaar  and Maha Shamshan Ghat  of Kawnia, two crematoriums in Barisal city , since 1850.  
This 168-year old festival started on Monday night and ended on Tuesday night at the Maha Shamshan Ghat in Kawnia Marokkhola and Aadi Shamshan Ghat in Natun Bazar areas of the city, said Manik Mukharjee Kudu, president of Maha Shamshan Rokkha Committee.
He said the festival observed peacefully in festive mood with special religious rituals before and on the night of Kalipuja for the blessings of the departed souls of dearest and nearest ones.
The devotees washing the preserved places of burial of the parts of the cremated dead body offered flowers, foods, and decorated places with lights, lamps and candle.
 They arranged various types of rituals (Puja), special prayers at the Shamshan Ghat for the eternal blessings of the departed souls of their dead dearest and nearest ones, community sources said.
 Total crematory area and houses of the Hindu community people were decorated with lights and lamps on this occasion at nights.
Worship of Maha Shamshan Kali, the goddess for the cremation-ground, also held on Wednesday early hours.
Kishor Kumar Dey, former secretary of Barishal Maha Shamshan Rakkha Committee,  said several 'Fanus', big sized colorful gas-filled Ballons, released in the sky in the night of Maha Shamshan Dipali at the Shamshan Ghats and stalls of sweetmeats, toys, playing marry go-round' also arranged in the areas on this occasion.
Tight security arrangements also taken by the law enforcers like RAB, APBN, Police and volunteers of the Maha Shamshan committee.
Law enforcers patrolled on city roads towards the Shamshan Ghats for ensuring safety and security of the devotees and maintained peaceful inter-religious harmony and coexistences, said Mosharraf Hossain, Barisal Metropolitan Police Commissioner.
