BSS, Rajshahi :
Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) has adopted diversified measures to free the city from polythene use as it is being adjudged as the major problem of urban pollution.
To this end, the city corporation has taken decision of getting adequate support from business communities as they have a pioneering role in substantial and sustainable reduction of polythene manufacturing and marketing.
RCC Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton revealed this while addressing a view-sharing meeting with leaders and members of various business organizations in City Bhaban conference hall on Tuesday.
Chaired by RCC Chief Executive Officer Shah Momin, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by Panel Mayors Shariful Islam Babu, Rajab Ali and Tahera Begum Mili, business leader Moshraffar Hossain Akunji and RCC Secretary Rejaul Karim.
Liton asked the officials and employees concerned to create mass-awareness so that the citizens can be abstained from polluting environment through dumping garbage and wastes here and there.
He also urged them to free the footpaths and other public places from illegal and unauthorized occupation as early as possible.
He said: "Our environment is a testimony to the state of our mentality. We indiscriminately pollute our environment. We know that one day's cleaning operation is not enough but we have to make an effort to change our habit.
We have to remember not only to clean but also to stop throwing garbage to protect our environment".
He highlighted the importance of maintaining cleanliness at offices, institutions, homesteads and open places in the city since cleanliness is a must to keep air fresh and improve environment.
In absence of adequate awareness programmes and coordinated waste management policy, people dump wastes and make streets and public places dirty, Liton added.
Expressing his commitment of turning Rajshahi into a beautiful and habitable city, Liton said: "I want to regain the previous image of green and clean city through making it eye-catching one on a priority basis".
