HC grants 6-month bail to Khaleda in defamation case

Staff Reporter :
The High Court (HC) on Monday granted a six-month bail to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in a defamation case filed in Narail for making 'derogatory remarks' on martyrs of the Liberation War and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The HC bench of Justice Muhammad Abdul Hafiz and Justice Kashefa Hussain passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Khaleda seeking bail in the case.
On December 21, 2015, Khaleda in a discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in Dhaka raised questions about the actual number of Liberation War martyrs saying, "There are controversies over how many were martyred in the Liberation War. There are also many books and documents on the controversies."
Reacting over the Khaleda's remarks, Raihan Farooque Imam of Naragati in Narail filed a case with the Cognizance Court on December 24, 2015.
Advocate A J Mohammad Ali took part in the hearing on behalf of Khaleda Zia. Khaleda landed in jail on February 8 this year after a Dhaka court sentenced her to five years' imprisonment in Zia Orphanage Trust case.
