IUB River Club cleans up Balu river

Members of the River Conservation Club of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) with dozens of other students took part in programme to clean Balu river in city on Thursday.
The students went to the Balu River and cleaned up its banks following a daylong workshop styled 'Know your River, Revive it Better', said a press release.
The event began with the welcome speech by Md Abdul Khaleque, the dean of school of environmental science and management on the university campus.
A short documentary filmed by the river club was presented at the programme. The department's another teacher Md Hafizur Rahaman moderated the session.
At the 'meet and greet' session, Bangladeshi mountaineer Mohit, also chief guest at the programme, shared his experiences of climbing and his other achievements with the participants.
River activist Ireen Sultana, who was a special guest at the programme, spoke on importance of youth leadership for saving rivers in the country. She also answered the questions from participants on rivers.
After the cleaning programme, club members held a short survey among people on the banks of the river to understand present condition of the river.
RCC's president of Dilruba Shimo briefed the students about the survey.
The club is planning to set up some waste bins on the banks, she said.
