Sylhet Bureau  :
A Sylhet court on Monday sentenced two men to death in a case filed over for smuggling drugs.
The convicted were Hossain Ahmad Manik, 51, son Muhib Ali of village Rajjakpur, and Pervej Alam Suman, 26, son of Tamsir Ali of Tikarpara Uttarbhag village in Bianibazar upazila in the district, court sources said.
Metropolitan session judge Mujibur Rahman Bhuinya announced the verdict in the afternoon. The metropolitan session
'Suman was present in the court while the verdict was delivered but Manik was absconding since he had been granted bail in the case in 2015,' said the court's public prosecutor Mafur Ali.
On March 9, 2014, four parcels arrived at the foreign post office department at Dakkhin Surma in Sylhet from Lahore, Pakistan bearing the names and addresses of four individuals.
On suspicion, the post office authorities opened the parcels and found 8.45 kilograms of heroin inside. The names and addresses on the parcels were fake, said the authorities.
The post office's customs unit assistant director Mizanur Rahman filed a case with Dakkhin Surma police in this connection on March 13 in the same year.
On investigation, the police traced the phone numbers written on the parcels to Manik and Parvej.
On November 2, 2015, the police submitted the charge sheet to the court against the two men for their involvement with trafficking drugs to the United Kingdom, the sources said.
