Business Desk :
Bangladesh Bidi Sramik Federation has given a memorandum to the National Board of Revenue (NBR) on four-point demand. In the presence of thousands of workers, the leaders of Bidi Sramik Federation handed over the memorandum to NBR chairman Md. Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan on Wednesday. Federation president Amin Uddin BSC, general secretary MK Bangali, joint general secretary Abdur Rahman and organizing Secretary Hirik Hossain were also present, says a press release.
Earlier, at 10am, central leaders of Bidi Workers Federation organized a human chain in front of NBR office. Thousands of workers & employees across the country took part in this. At the human chain, the speakers urged the government to consider their 4 point demand in the upcoming 2018-19 fiscal budget. The demands are: 1. As long as there are cigarettes in the country, the bidi industry will remain, 2. India's bidi industry will be declared as 'cottage industry', 3. Like India, customs duty of per thousand bidi should be 14 taka, 4. The bidi industry that produce less than 20 lakhs of shillings will be tax-free.
In the human chain Amin Uddin BSC said that Bidi industrial is the victims of discrimination for the last 15 years. That's why the factories of this industry are decreasing at the geometric rate. Millions of workers are jobless & helpless. Especially the river erosion area & the 'Monga' affiliate area, where no other crops can cultivate except tobacco. In those areas, the farmers, businessmen and workers are suffering from depression. But the neighboring country of India declared the Bidi as 'Cottage Industry'.
