Chittagong Bureau :
State  owned Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC)  is going to get life  again after 27 years.
BSC was constituted under President ordinance in 1972  replacing the previous name National Shipping Corporation (NSC) after emergence of Bangladesh. Sources said,  upto 1991, BSC  had 38 vessels of different capacities  and  following the continuous loss of the state owned shipping  sector , 36 vessels were sold out in phases.
At present BSC  owns only two  lighter tanker  with dilapidated condition  having average age about 30 yrs.
As a result this state owned organization is on the way of  vessel less maritime organization. Following the Prime Minister's  bold initiatives to build the state owned maritime commercial organization into a  global standard shipping sector , 5 new vessels will  join  the BSC fleet  by this year in phases   and  one vessel is expected to join BSC fleet by July next.
This was disclosed by  the managing director of BSC Commodore Yahya Sayeed  at a views exchange meeting with the journalists at its Chittagong head office on Tuesday .  BSC chief in his deliverations emphasized the need of at least 40 to 50 vessels  of  different  categories  considering the present demands of ocean going vessels. In the views exchange meet, he told that these 5 vessels will be supplied by China National  Imports and Exports Machineries Ltd  at a cost of  Tk.1,900 crores  .
Out of 5 vessels, 3 oil tankers and  two bulk cargo carriers,  sources said. The meet was told that BSC earned profit of Tk.8.65 crores  in last fiscal  and hoped  more profits after joining the new vessels.
