Campus Report :
A large portion of our society is deprived of higher education. Therefore, the Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid has called on private entrepreneurs and benevolent individuals to come forward to contribute in disseminating knowledge among the people from all walks of life. He insisted that the educational institutions must move forward with the aim of serving the society and must not see education as a profitable commodity. The Minister said these on  Thursday while speaking at the 17th Convocation of East West University (EWU) at Aftabnagar in the capital  as representative of the President and Chancellor of the university. He also congratulated the university authority for fulfilling all the regulatory conditions and achieving the permanent Sanad. A total of 1840 undergraduate and graduate students conferred degrees and three of them were awarded the prestigious gold medals by the Education Minister.
The convocation speaker, Prof Emeritus of Dhaka University, Dr Anisuzzaman lamented that human values are deteriorating at a fast pace all around the world. Therefore, he urged the young graduates to act sensibly and work towards creating a tolerant society.
Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of EWU and former governor of Bangladesh Bank, Dr Mohammed Farashuddin and Vice Chancellor of the University Prof Dr MM Shahidul Hasan also delivered their speech on the occasion. They said, the young graduates must be visionary with their ideas and show patriotism in their line of work to ensure a democratic society, free from poverty and terrorism.
Members of the Board of Trustees, the Treasurer, Deans, chairpersons of the departments, teachers, staff, graduating students and their parents attended the convocation ceremony. The students expressed their delight upon receiving their certificates in due time and completing their long-awaited academic venture.
