Jessore housewife succumbs to burn injuries
JESSORE:  A housewife who suffered burn injuries while cooking in her kitchen of Tawra village in Jhikargachha upazila on Thursday died at a hospital here on Friday evening. China Begum, 30, wife of Anwar Hossain of the village, succumbed to her injuries at Jessore General Hospital around 7pm. Family sources said China's sari caught fire around 8pm on Thursday while cooking in the kitchen, leaving her injured. She was taken to the hospital where she died today, said sub-inspector of Kotwali Police Station Mahbub Alam, reports UNB..
One killed in Chuadanga road accident
CHUADANGA: A man was killed in a road accident at Osmanpur village in Alamdanga upazila on Thursday night. Police said the accident took place when a sugarcane-laden tractor knocked down a bi-cycle around 8 pm, leaving the bi-cycle rider Amriul, son of Sona Sheikh, hailing from Kushtia district, dead on the spot. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to morgue for autopsy, said officer-in-charge of Alamdanga Police Station Jihad Fakhrul Alam, reports UNB.
One held with arms, ammo in C'nawabganj
CHAPAINAWABGANJ: Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested an alleged arms peddler with a revolver, a pistol, a magazine and five rounds of bullet in Chapainawabganj on Friday night. The arrestee was identified as Md Moinul Islam, 38, son of late Shamsuddin Bhola of Shukrabari Chowdala village under Gomostapur upazila in the district. Acting on secret information, a team of RAB-5 conducted a drive at Ekhlaspur village of Shibganj upazila at about 7:30 pm yesterday and arrested Moinul with the arms and ammunition. Later, the arrestee was handed over to police. A case was filed with Shibganj Police Station in connection with the incident, reports BSS.
Students shed tear hearing Liberation War stories
KHULNA: Students of 28 school and madrasa under Daulatpur and Khanjahan Ali thana in the city shed tears when they heard the history of brutal killing, gang rape, arson and torture against the Bangalees by the Pakistani occupation forces and their local collaborators during the Liberation War in 1971. Freedom Fighters on Saturday expressed their hardship and fighting experience to the students at Daulatpur Muhasin Secondary School premises with a slogan 'Esho Muktijuddher Galpo Shuni.' Chaired by the Secondary and Higher Secondary Directorate, Khulna Zone, Professor T M Zakir Hossain, parliament member of Khulna-3 constituency Begum Monnuzan Sufian addressed as the chief guest at the programme. Chairman of Bangladesh Jute Association (BJA) Sheikh Sayed Ali, Lt Commander (Retd) Zalal Uddin (Beer Uttam), Freedom Fighter Noor Islam Bond addressed, among others. The Freedom Fighters narrated the story of different wars that happened in greater Khulna including Shiromony area in the city, reports BSS.
Book Fair begins in Mymensingh
MYMENSINGH: A-10 day long book fair organised by Mymensingh Pourashava began in the town recently. Deputy Commissioner Md Khalilur Rahman inaugurated the fair. A simple function was held on the occasion at Town Hall. Mayor of the Pourashava Ekramul Haque presided over the function. The function was addressed among others by Additional Police Super Joyeeta Shilpy, Principal Syed Nazrul Islam, AKM Abdur Rafique, Director of Srejanshel Publisher Association, Shehab Uddin Bhuiyan, Panel Mayor Nazrul Islam and Chief Executive of Pourashava Tariqul Alam. Addressing as chief guest the DC urged the young generation to read books for acquiring knowledge that changes attitudes, reports BSS.
A total of 52 stalls have been set up in the fair. Of those stalls 47 came from Dhaka.
The fair will be concluded on January 11, sources said.
