Chittagong Bureau :
The much-awaited 5.2 kilometer-long Muradpur-Lalkhan Bazar flyover in the city was opened yesterday much ahead of the scheduled time.
Sources at Chittagong Development Authority (CDA), builder of the flyover, said the main structure of the flyover is fit for traffic movement and it will be opened to traffic on experimental basis on Friday.
Primarily two lanes of the flyover will be opened to traffic from Muradpur to Lalkhan Bazar as an Eid gift for the people of Chittagong, the sources added. Prime minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to formally inaugurate the fly over after the holy Eid-ul Fitre.
However, opening of the flyover may defer if heavy rainfall is experienced in the city, the sources added. Construction works of the 5.2 kilometre-long Muradpur-Lalkhan Bazar flyover, as part of the massive development works for Chittagong under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina are almost done.
The construction works of the longest flyover in the second largest city and country's commercial capital Chittagong have already been completed, said Project Director Mahfuzur Rahman. The finishing works of the flyover, including setting up electric pools, were also completed and we are going to complete the works far ahead the deadline that has been extended till June in 2018, the project director said.
The first part of the flyover is from Bahaddarhat point to Sholoshahar Gate Number-2, the second one from Sholoshahar Gate Number-2 to GEC intersection and the 3rd one from GEC intersection to WASA intersection. The city's first Bahaddarhat flyover will connect Muradpur-Lalkhan Bazar flyover which will immensely ease traffic congestion in the busiest areas of the city, he further added.
CDA is implementing the flyover project at a cost of around Taka 697 crore. The Muradpur-Lalkhan Bazar flyover is named after late prominent Awami League leader Akhtaruzzaman Chow-dhury Babu, former industry and commerce secretary of Bangladesh Awami League.
The flyover will be extended up to WASA intersection and it would connect 18-kilometre-long elevated express way to Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport.
