Probe into Haizda flood control embankment corruption begins

Concerned authorities and police have started vigorous investigations into allegations of corruption by some Netrakona Water Development Board (WDB) officials and project committee members in connection with repairing of Haizda flood control embankment around the Dingaputa Haor in Mohanganj upazila of the district, official sources said.
Standing Boro crops worth about Taka 70 crore were reportedly damaged in the haor areas of the Mohanganj upazila because of flash flood caused by development of breaches on several points of 31 kilometers Haizda flood control embankment recently, the sources said.
According to the sources, director general (DG) of WDB Jahangir Kabir visited the flood-hit haor areas on April 8 last.
During his visit, the DG stand released Shahabuddin Ahmed sub-assistant engineer of WDB Netrakona for his negligence of duty.
Meanwhile, panel chairman of Netrakona Zila Parishad Abdul Hannan Ratan filed a case with Mohanganj police station against six project committee members of the Haizda flood control embankment repairing project for their corrupt activities involving repairing of the embankment.
