Potters switching to other professions

Traditional earthenware facing extinction

Traditional crafts of pottery and earthenware are  facing  extinction as potters are switching to other professions in Bangladesh including Nilphamari district.
 They are finding it hard to live through this profession as people are using silver, ceramic and glassware, Chinese, plastic and others kitchen dishes. The earthenware crafts are only used specially on the occasion of Pahela Baishakh .    
On the other hand, most of potters are now considering in switching to other professions like winter vegetable cultivation, poultry farm, fish cultivation and others as they are finding it hard to earn their livelihood remaining in this profession.  
Meanwhile, peoples from all classes are used earthenware as it was one of the most ancient crafts. Now it is going to extinct.
Potters Vobeshor Roy, Nirmal Roy, Amzad Ali, Abdul Matin and Kala Mamud, Kalar Bazar village of Etakhola UP under Nilphamari Sadarupazila of the district said that, "they have been finding it hard to earn their living, sending their children to school and think of better life as amid plastic and Chinese and other wares penetrated in the market"         
While contacted some of potteries at Chinir Kuthy area of Etakhola UP under Nilphamari Sadar Upazila of the district said , they are now turning away from their passion and love for the profession as they are tired of struggling to cope up with living through this profession".
They called on the government and non-government organizations to come forward to revive this profession, which they think, will see its extinction very soon.
Adv Momtazul Haque, General Secretary of District Awami League said,  poor families in the district were used the pots as kitchen household earlier.
Even some of the poor families are using the pots as their kitchen household till now, though the different kinds of kitchen wares are available in the market".  
He added, the crafts of pottery facing extinction as peoples are now using the silver, ceramic and glassware, chinese, plastic and others kitchen dishes.
