Int'l Mother Language Day observed at Edmonton

The International Mother Language Day was observed paying rich tribute to the language movement martyrs at Edmonton, the capital city of Alberta province of Canada, on February 21 with a call for protecting all mother tongues of the world.
Marking the day, President of Bangladesh Heritage and Ethnic Society of Alberta Masud Bhuyan and Vice-President Faysal Bhuiyan, Executive of Canada unit command of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad also President of Bangladesh Heritage Museum and Bangladesh Press Club of Alberta Delwar Jahid, Advocate Arif Khan and journalists Saifur Hasan, Md Ruhul Amin, Farhana Kader and Chandni Sultana Bhuiyan placed wreath at the temporary Shaheed Minar there, according to a message received here yesterday.
Bangladesh Heritage and Ethnic Society of Alberta (BHESA) has built a temporary monument at Edmonton city and took up various programmes to observe the day with due solemnity and fervor, said a release.
The BHESA also awarded "Ekushey Heritage Padak" to Dr A Ali for community service, Hazera Akhter for volunteerism and MJMF, Bangladesh Sports Club, for upholding the spirit of Ekushey and Bangladeshi heritages.
Students' Association of University of Alberta also observed the day separately.
Besides, the Premier of Alberta Rachel Notley greeted the Bangladeshi nationals in Alberta on the occasion of Amar Ekushey.
In a message, greeting Bangladeshi people he said, "The mother language of the Bengali culture is a crucial part of the history and traditions you share with our province".
Rachel also said, "This day not only serves to promote and celebrate cultural diversity and multilingualism, but it is a day of remembrance for the students who were killed in Dhaka as they were demonstrating for recognition of their language, Bangla".
