Farmers' field-day observed

Popularise cultivation of flood tolerant rice for food security: Experts

Agriculture experts at a farmers' field day have called for popularising cultivation of flood tolerant rice to attain sustainable food security by increasing rice production amid changing climate.
They made the call at the event organised by RDRS Bangladesh in the paddy fields of farmers Asharf Ali and Mohammad Nader at village Kalamati under Khuniagachh union of Sadar upazila in Lalmonirhat on Monday afternoon, a press release said.
The farmers harvested flood tolerant BRRI dhan51, BRRI dhan52, BINA dhan11 and BINA dhan12 rice and local variety 'Madhubas' rice on the occasion.
RDRS Bangladesh assisted 130 farmers of Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila to expand cultivation of these rice varieties with support of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) under the Stress Tolerant Rice for South Asia and Africa (IRRI-STRASA) project.
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Bidhu Bhushan Roy attended the event as chief guest with programme manager (field coordination) of RDRS Bangladesh for Lalmonirhat Abu Sadat Md Maidul Islam in the chair.
Deputy Director (Training) of the DAE Dr Sarwarul Haque, assistant coordinator (environment) of RDRS Bangladesh Abdul Mannan, its Technical Officer Saiful Islam, Sadar Upazila Agriculture Extension Officer Enamul Haque, also spoke.
After harvesting the rice varieties, the farmers got yield rates of 5.33 tonnes for BRRI dhan52, 4.80 tonnes for BRRI dhan51, 4.10 tonnes for BINA dhan11m 4.15 tonnes for BINA dhan12 and 3.40 tonnes in terms of paddy per hectare.
While narrating experience in cultivating flood tolerant BRRI dhan51, BRRI dhan52, BINA dhan11 and BINA dhan12 rice varieties, farmer Ashraf Ali said he cultivated each of these rice varieties on his one bigha of land and got excellent yield.
BSS from Panchagarh adds: Farmers' field day was held at former Dhohola Khakrabari enclave at Panchaet para in Debiganj upazila of the district yesterday.
The government has taken a special project under development programme.
The farmer would be involved in development project by concerned agriculture department. After getting the government order Debiganj upazila agriculture department will form a farmer team by 25 farmers and made a school in the name of Farmer Field School.
Local agriculture office will arrange a professional training to the farmers on poison free vegetable production, pisciculture, quality seed preserve, cattle rearing and vegetable cultivation.
The training period for the farmers fixed at 22 days.
After ended their training, the agriculture office arranged a farmer field day on the premises of farmer field school.
Debiganj upazila agriculture officer Md Abdulla-Al-Mamun addressed the function as the chief guest.
The function was addressed, among others, by assistant agriculture extension officer Jakiur Rahman and sub-assistant officer Abdul Bari.
Debiganj upazila Awami League president A.S.M. Nuruzzaman presided over the function.
Later, the farmer narrated their training experience in the function.
